The ancient Egyptian, Chinese, and Indian cultures practiced forms of body-weight and yoga-based exercises. The ancient Greeks developed among the first free weights, hand-held weights with a hole for gripping rather than a handle, called “halteres.”The world of fitness continues to develop a multitude of equipment trends along with main staples that will forever stand the test of time such as the barbell, dumbbell, and kettlebell.  There are various forms of machine-based equipment.  Training equipment is designed for all settings, whether training in a fitness gym, weight room, yoga studio, climbing gym, or in the comforts of your own home gym.  

The goal of this article is to bring awareness of equipment that may or may not be underrated in the reader's mind. I have been a strength and conditioning professional for quite some time now, so, I have been able to witness equipment come and go over the years. There is training equipment that may be categorized as the underdog, underrated, or downright forgotten completely. 

These 5 pieces of training equipment will shine a bright light on equipment that is not always the flashiest tool in the tool box…but what it lacks in looks they definitely make up for in a plethora of benefits for the trainee that is utilized by the trainer.   

 

AB Wheel

Utilization

AB Wheels are a key tool that targets mainly the core muscles, erector Spinae, latissimus dorsi, deltoids, chest, biceps, and triceps. 

Benefits

 Provides total body utilization with proper technique. Incorporating muscle gain in shoulders, arms, upper and lower back, glutes, hips, and abdominal muscles along with obliques.  

Justifications

Minimal footprint, cost-effective, portable, low training age requirements, build a strong core, saves on time.

Concept 2 Rower

Utilization

Body Weight training has endless benefits as it is best for all novice lifters to understand how to move our own bodies and how to absorb forces.

Body Weight training is free and it goes with you everywhere…no escaping our own body.  

Exercises to Implement

Body weight squats, body weight lunges, pull-ups, chin-ups, sprinting, jumping, landing, stretching, anything that you have done with a DB, KB, Barbell you should always perform for the most part with your own body weight prior to using equipment.  And the list goes on.
